Lying 24 kilometres north of the Tropic of Capricorn, construction of the Town of Paraburdoo commenced in January 1970 and the first residents started to move in during September of that year. Affiliated with the iron ore mining industry, the town was purpose-built to accommodate its workers.
Paraburdoo was named after the Aboriginal name Pirupardo which literally means “Meat Feathers”, so named because of the proliferation of correllas which frequent the area.
The town boasts a hospital and a variety of sporting facilities including an oval, basketball courts, tennis courts, air-conditioned squash courts.
Paraburdoo’s highest recorded maximum temperature is 48.9C and the lowest recorded temperature is 1.5C. The average rainfall is 295mm. Rainfall can vary considerably from the average due to seasonal cyclones.
There is accommodation available at the local hotel, and P&O Catering facilities. There is a modern supermarket from within the shopping centre where there is a pharmacy, travel centre, newsagency, bakery and café. The McRae Shopping Area also has a variety of specialised stores.
