South Hedland, located approximately 15 minutes drive inland from the coastal town of Port Hedland in the State's north, was born when the booming Port Hedland ran out of suitable building land in the mid 1960s. To solve this problem a satellite town was established which is now known as South Hedland.
South Hedland serves predominantly as a residential area and a central point for many of the surrounding Aboriginal communities.
The town contains many facilities including the Matt Dann Cultural Centre which offers a variety of movies, live theatre and live musical performances and a variety of places for dining or take away.
There is a local bus service which links South Hedland to Port Hedland with regular services.
Motel style accommodation can be found offering apartments, deluxe and standard rooms and a caravan park that offers ensuite cabins, shaded and grassed powered sites.
