Yelarbon meaning water lily which grows in a lagoon, is noted for many interesting things.
The area grew the first commercial tobacco crops in Australia in the late 1870s and tobacco curing barns can still be seen from the highway.
Yelarbon is also known for it’s Desert and Spinifex Country. This geologically distinct area is characterised by a naturally occurring salinity scald, and this naturally hostile environment results in some unique vegetation and habitats, including spinifex grass (Triodia scariosa). Many animals live in this harsh environment including seven species of frogs, seven species of reptiles, a species of native, mouse-sized marsupial and nearly sixty species of birds. Stop and take a walk through the spinifex, or join Spinifex Country Tours’ interactive driving or walking tour.
